The key specifications of these filters are <a href=\"#FSR\">Free Spectral Range (FSR)<\/a>, and <a href=\"#Finesse\">Finesse<\/a>. The FSR of a SEF is equal to the spacing between the transmittance peak frequencies. The finesse is said to describe the sharpness of the transmittance peaks and is equal to the FSR divided by the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the transmittance peak frequencies.<\/p>\n<p>The SEF is a version of a simple etalon, Mirror|Spacer|Mirror, in which thin film dielectrics are used as the mirrors and a solid glass substrate is used as the spacer. Iridian\u2019s SEFs are made up of two plane parallel reflecting surfaces, side A &amp; B, separated by a quartz substrate with thickness \u201cd\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The SEF is specified\/quantified primarily by two parameters: <em>Free Spectral Range<\/em> (FSR) &amp; <em>Finesse<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[nice-button link=&#8221;\/product-category\/telecom\/etalon\/&#8221;] Etalon Filters[\/nice-button]<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"FSR\"><\/a>Free Spectral Range (FSR) [GHz]<\/h2>\n<p>The Free Spectral Range (FSR) is the separation between two adjacent peak frequencies f<sub>i<\/sub> and f<sub>i+1<\/sub>:<\/p>\n<p>FSR = f<sub>i<\/sub> \u2013 f<sub>i+1<\/sub><\/p>\n<p>Neglecting the effect of dispersion in the quartz spacer, the FSR can be predicted by the following equation:<\/p>\n<p>FSR = c\/( 2\u00b7n\u00b7d\u00b7cos(\u00d8) )<\/p>\n<p>where c is the speed of light, n is the refractive index of the spacer, d is the quartz substrate thickness, and\u00a0\u00d8 is the angle of incidence.
