{"id":30378,"date":"2022-07-21T08:00:37","date_gmt":"2022-07-21T12:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iridian.ca\/?p=30378"},"modified":"2022-07-21T09:50:00","modified_gmt":"2022-07-21T13:50:00","slug":"how-to-enhance-blocking-using-two-filters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iridian.ca\/zh-hans\/cn-learning-center\/how-to-enhance-blocking-using-two-filters\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Enhance Blocking Using Two Filters"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><u>When One + One <\/u><u>\u2260 Two:<\/u><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">How to enhance optical blocking using multiple filters\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When signal light is very precious, any background light that reaches the detector of an optical system can greatly compromise signal to noise ratio. If the signal is low then the background must be maintained at an even lower level and so background light must be minimized.\u00a0 For instance, in a Raman analytical system only one in a million photons will be Raman scattered so each must be captured an analyzed from among the 999,999 non-Raman scattered photons.<\/p>\n<p>In such applications, extremely high levels of blocking are necessary outside of the signal band of interest. Where a typical high-end system may specify an out of band blocking with an optical density of 6 or more (OD&gt;6 or &lt;0.0001%) some systems seek OD&gt;8 or even OD&gt;10. \u00a0\u00a0These levels are difficult, in some cases impossible, to manufacture, test, and guarantee with an individual optical filter.<\/p>\n<p>This can lead to the proposition of using more than one blocking filter \u2013 the logic being that if one filter provides OD&gt;6 then two filters together will provide double the blocking and achieve OD&gt;12 (or at least close to this level).\u00a0 However, the way in which the blocking is achieved using multi-layer thin film filters, that is via reflection and not absorption, makes this a flawed argument unless there is careful consideration and set-up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One plus one does not always equal two<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Case 1: Two Filters in Parallel at Normal Incidence<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The typical approach is to suggest two filters arranged in series with the normal to the filter surface colinear with the incident beam. This case applies to coatings on the front and back surface of a single substrate, or multiple filters in series.<\/p>\n<p>Handling the multiple reflections between the coatings, the solution to this arrangement is a geometric series with functional form<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iridian.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/How-to-formula-01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30368 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iridian.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/How-to-formula-01-300x139.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"106\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>where I<sub>0<\/sub> is input light intensity, T<sub>1<\/sub>, T<sub>2<\/sub>, R<sub>1<\/sub>, R<sub>2<\/sub> are the transmittance and reflectance of each filter respectively<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Example \u2013 Filter 1 and filter 2 each have OD3 blocking (R=0.999). The solution to T<sub>final<\/sub> is OD3.3<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iridian.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/how-to-Picture1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30370 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iridian.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/how-to-Picture1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"607\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iridian.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/how-to-Picture1.png 607w, https:\/\/www.iridian.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/how-to-Picture1-480x109.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 607px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Case 2: Two Filters in Parallel at Non-normal Incidence<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In this scenario the filters can be arranged at an angle such that the reflected beam does not reflect back along the incident light path and is effectively removed or \u201cwalks-off\u201d from the beam path (with appropriate stray light mitigation).<\/p>\n<p>The solution to this arrangement is<\/p>\n<h5><em> T<sub>Final<\/sub> = I<sub>0<\/sub>T<sub>1<\/sub>T<sub>2<\/sub><\/em><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Example \u2013 Filter 1 and filter 2 each have OD3 blocking (R=0.999). The solution to T<sub>final<\/sub> is OD6<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iridian.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/how-to-Picture2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30372 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iridian.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/how-to-Picture2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"606\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iridian.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/how-to-Picture2.png 606w, https:\/\/www.iridian.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/how-to-Picture2-480x123.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 606px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In \u201cCase 1\u201d doubling the number of filters is far from doubling the net blocking achieved but in \u201cCase 2\u201d the use of two filters does achieve the doubled blocking desired.\u00a0 However, it is important to note that for \u201cCase 2\u201d the filters have to be designed and manufactured with the intended angle of incidence in mind.\u00a0 If \u201cstandard\u201d blocking filters designed for use at normal incidence are used the increased angle will result in both a wavelength shift and a relative splitting between polarizations of incidence light so would not be a recommended solution.
